Clear Lake, population estimated at 1,300,  is the largest city and county seat of Deuel County, South Dakota. 


Clear Lake was surveyed and platted in September 1884 and incorporated as a town on July 6, 1885.  First named Deuel Center because of its location near the geographic center of Deuel County, the city was renamed Clear Lake after the beautiful nearby lake. 

Clear Lake History

 Located along the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railroad line, Clear Lake prospered quickly and soon became the leading business and agricultural center of the area.  Clear Lake became the county seat for Deuel County in 1890 and construction of the current courthouse began in 1917. 


The community is also the home of the Deuel School District, educating students in Pre-school through 12th grade from throughout central Deuel County.  Clear Lake celebrated its 125th birthday in 2010 and continues to lead the area in both retail and agricultural economic activities.
